Mission

ACBON works to make the Nakivale community a place where crises-affected populations are effectively protected, assisted, and enabled to rebuild their lives and livelihoods with dignity.

Vision

To build  a unified, well-informed and effective CBO sector in Nakivale contributing to the  community’s wellbeing and improving the quality of life

ABOUT US

Created in October 2019 with the support from the Now and Tomorrow International, Office of the Prime Minister and the District Government, the Association of Community Based Organizations in Nakivale (ACBON) is a platform uniting CBOs of Nakivale together in the cause of advancing the community well-being. The platform works on coordinating and facilitating collective action with the aim of enhancing development, meeting humanitarian needs, and defending the community’s interests in Nakivale

ACBON works towards a system that enables both refugees and the host community affected by humanitarian crises to receive equitable access to quality assistance and protection. ACBON promotes innovative approaches to humanitarian policy development and implementation, and offers evidence-based, solutions-oriented advocacy. ACBON also promotes equitable engagement of CBOs to make the humanitarian system more inclusive. ACBON’s work is based on the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence as well as the principles of partnership

PROGRAMS

CAPACITY BUILDING

ACBON helps to provide the mechanism and support needed for CBOs to connect, partner and multiply their contributions in addition to capacity building to solve community problems, activate development and meet humanitarian needs.

NETWORKING

We network, advocate and facilitate international agencies and other donor agencies to work with our local CBOs. This facilitation allows them to develop wider outreach efforts with much fewer resources. It also lessens the possibility for effort duplication between CBOs and larger international organizations. By funding smaller organizations, larger international organizations are able to reduce management costs and allow smaller organizations to take charge in the solution-creating process. The CBOs are more than likely located within the physical space of the community that they are serving, they reach a wider audience using much less effort.

ADVOCACY

ACBON works to create the appropriate environment that enables CBOs to defend the rights and needs of the community by acting as their advocate and spokesman at the local, national and international level. ACBON provides forums for interaction and exchange of information among its CBO members.

AWARDS

The ACBON Awards program honors community based organizations from throughout the Nakivale Refugee Settlement that demonstrate extraordinary effort, innovation, leadership, and excellence in providing service to humanity. ACBON does not only recognize prominent CBOs, but also the smaller, lesser-known groups in the least developed villages, whose exemplary service and success may have gone unnoticed and unappreciated on the local stage.

In addition to recognition of local CBOs, ACBON also honors outstanding individuals whose work involves them with the community. The NAKIV Humanitarian Award is presented to an outstanding individual who contributes substantially to the community well-being.
